Frequently asked questions

Why does 500 GB show as 465.66 GiB?

Because they are different units. A GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes (decimal, SI) and a GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary, IEC). Drive manufacturers advertise in GB while operating systems report in GiB, which is where the missing 7% goes.

Which unit should I use in my own code?

Whichever your audience reads — but label it honestly. Memory and file sizes are conventionally binary (MiB, GiB), while network throughput and storage marketing are decimal. Writing MB when you mean MiB is the actual source of most confusion.

Why are bits included?

Because bandwidth is quoted in bits and file sizes in bytes. A 100 Mbps link transfers at most 12.5 MB/s, and that factor of eight explains a lot of apparently slow downloads.
